Bob Dylan has been awarded a Nobel Prize for literature.
The Swedish Academy made the announcement to Dylan for "having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition." They stated that the decision reflects their belief that Dylan's songs deserve to be included in a tradition of poetic human expression that goes back thousands of years.
At a ceremony in December Bob Dylan will be awarded his Nobel medal, made out of 18-carat gold and a cheque for roughly $900,000.
The New York Times stated that his win marks the first time an American artist has been given the award since author Toni Morrison in 1993.
