American Pie was first released in 1971 and was the #1 in the U.S. for four weeks in 1972.

The song was written 'The Day the Music Died' in 1959 when Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson tragically died when their plane went down in Iowa. Don McLean was only 13 at the time of the accident, but in 1971 the accident became the focus for his hit 'American Pie'
