Bruce Springsteen performs My City of Ruins for Christchurch

Music 22/02/2017

Bruce Springsteen played at Christchurch's AMI Stadium last night the eve of the anniversary of the 2011 earthquakes.

He acknowledged the petition that Christchurch had been running to get him to play the city, and dedicated 'My City of Ruins' to the people who'd suffered in both the earthquakes and the recent Port Hills fires.

My City of Ruins became sort of a memorial song in Christchurch after the earthquakes struck in 2011.

This is his full speech from last night:

"Quite a few years ago, I got a letter. A petition, actually... about a town that suffered an earthquake - and I was to come and play. It took a while, but I'm glad we got here and got the chance to drive around and take a look at the city."

"And I just want to say this now for all the folks that suffered in the earthquakes... I send this out with a lot of love and prayers."

"To all the emergency services who I know were working today to detain some of the fires outside of town. This is for those folks... and for all of you."
