9 times Keith Richards escaped death

News 19/12/2017

Keith Richards has just turned 74 and he's lived an insane rock and roll life during his lifetime.

He's had a few brushes with death over the years though but managed to escape to live the tale every time.

1. He survived the London Bombings in 1944

When he was just a baby him and his mother narrowly escaped the London Bombings in 1944. Some of Keith's neighbours were killed in the blasts.

2. He survived Strychnine Poisoning in the 70's

Keith was smoking dope with some others when he realised his dope had been laced with strychnine.

"Someone put strychnine in my dope, it was in Switzerland," he said. "I was totally comatose but I was totally awake. I could listen to everyone, and they were like, ‘He’s dead, he’s dead!’ waving their fingers and pushing me about, and I was thinking, ‘I’m not dead!'"

3. He avoided getting burned in a fire when he fell asleep while smoking

Keith and girlfriend Anita Pallenberg fell asleep in bed while he was holding a lit cigarette and both made it out safely.

4. He was once electrocuted onstage

While performing 'The Last Time' he was almost fatally electrocuted after hitting his mic stand with the neck of his guitar. Apart from burned guitar strings and a bit of unconsciousness he was fine.

5. In 1973 he burned his house down and survived

He blamed the fire on a mouse chewing through wiring not from a cigarette like the last time. He sadly lost his Redlands Estate home after a horrible house fire in '73.

6. He was almost crushed by books

In 1998 he broke three ribs after being hit by books when he stood on a chair to reach a book and slipped. "It was one of those moments where you have to make a decision: take it in the ribs or take a shot in the temple on the desk," he said.

7. He fell out of a tree from several feet up

He fortunately walked away with a terrible headache and had to cancel a Rolling Stones tour.

8. He survived Ancarchy At Altamont in 1969

In 1969 in Altamont a member of the audience was killed during The Rolling Stones set. It turned into a violent show and Mick Jagger got punched in the head.

9. He snorted his father's ashes
