Actor Sir John Hurt dies aged 77
British actor Sir John Hurt has died from cancer aged 77.
Sir John's career spanned six decades, most notably as the lead character in the film adaption of Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984), and the deformed John Merrick in The Elephant Man (1980).
He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in June 2015 and given the all-clear by doctors less than four months later.
Sir John was knighted in the same year. In August 2015, he told Radio Timeshe wasn't concerned about dying, although he was starting to think about it as he grew older.
"We're all just passing time, and occupy our chair very briefly."
The two-time Oscar nominee also appeared in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), Alien (1979) and V for Vendetta (2005).
