Pegi Young, ex-wife of Neil Young, has died at the age of 66. The sad news was confirmed on Pegi's official Instagram Account.

The instagram post reads: “With great sadness, we confirm that on January 1, after a year-long battle with cancer, Pegi Young – mother, grandmother, sister, auntie, musician, activist and co-founder of the Bridge School – passed away surrounded by her friends and family in her native California. We request that the families' privacy be respected at this time.”

Pegi Young was married to Neil Young for 36 years until their separation and divorce in 2014. Pegi and Neil also founded the Bridge School for children with severe physical and speech impairments in 1986 after their son Ben was born with cerebral palsy.

Pegi released three solo albums since 2007 and toured extensively on her own, occasionally with Neil on guitar.

Neil Young has also paid tribute to his ex-wife, and Bridge School co-founder in a post on the rocker’s Archives site.

"Thanks Pegi, for being such a wonderful mother to our children,” Neil wrote Saturday, his first public comments since Pegi’s death. “You live inside of them and the many you have touched."
