David Gilmour's famed 'Black Strat' among his massive collection up for auction

News 27/03/2019

David Gilmour's famed 1969 Black Fender Stratocaster has been very well known in the rock'n'roll history.

'The Black Strat' was first purchased at Manny's on West 48th Street in New York back in 1970 and has become a staple guitar for Gilmour ever since.

Many of the guitars in this sale are guitars that have given me a tune

The guitar was primarily used between 1070-1986 for live shows as well as recording and was a key instrument to developing iconic Pink Floyd sounds, especially in albums like 'The Dark Side of The Moon', Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall, which featured Gilmour's unforgettable guitar solo on 'Comfortably Numb'.

The guitar had been extensively modified over the decades of it's career to accommodate Gilmour's ever-evolving style, proven in his critically acclaimed solo releases including his self-titled album in 1978, 'About Face', 'On an Island' and 'Rattle that Lock'.

On 20th June this year at Christie's in New York, this iconic strat will be the prized item of The David Gilmour Guitar Collection auction. Among the items sold include many of his Fender broadcasters, Esquires, Telecasters and Stratocasters, with all proceeds aimed to be donated to various charitable funds.

"Many of the guitars in this sale are guitars that have given me a tune," says Gilmour tells Christie's. "So a lot of them have earned their keep, you might say. These guitars have given so much to me, and it’s time for them to move on to other people who hopefully will find joy, and perhaps create something new."
