The Russian President, Vladimir Putin has said that Elton John was "mistaken" about the LGBT rights in Russia and praised him as a musical genius.
Last Friday, John expressed his disappointment with Putin's comment on old-fashioned liberal values that had been rejected by most people in Western nations. John also accuses the president of hypocrisy who claimed he wants happiness for the LGBT community, but there were reports of gay scenes in 'Rocketman' censored in Russia.
"I have a lot of respect for [Elton John], he is a genius musician, we all enjoy his music, but I think he is mistaken," Putin said when asked about Elton John's comments in Osaka where he was attending a G20 summit.
He says that Russian authorities had a "relaxed and unprejudiced" attitude towards the LGBT community, but decisions about gender identity should be restricted to adults only.
Russian law bans any propaganda of "homosexuality among minors".
