A heated debate has been burning on social media site Twitter involving an unlikely musical pairing: band Van Halen and chart-topping pop star Billie Eilish.
During an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, 17-year-old Billie Eilish admitted she'd never heard of Van Halen. She responded "Who?" when Kimmel asked if she could name any of the band's songs.
Eilish didn't recognise other 80s artists Huey Lewis or Run-DMC, but she did know Madonna and Cyndi Lauper. You can watch the interview above, the relevant discussion about 1980s music starting at 3 mins 15 seconds.
After the segment aired, fans of both acts tweeted their feelings, some expressing their disbelief at the teenager's lack of classic rock knowledge.
Wolfgang Van Halen himself put the matter to rest with his own tweet, saying:
Kimmel himself noted in the interview that the questions were a little unfair: "If you asked me questions about 1943, I probably wouldn’t know the answers either."
It's also worth noting that Van Halen guitarist Eddie Van Halen rarely listens to music at all — from any decade. In 2015, Wolf's dad said that he hadn't purchased an album since Peter Gabriel's So in 1986.
"It’s an odd thing, but I’ve been this way my whole life," Eddie said. "I couldn’t make a contemporary record if I wanted to, because I don’t know what contemporary music sounds like."
