The petition has the support of Peart's family and it aims to convince the city mayor, Walter Sendzik, to place "some sort of plaque or statue" to commemorate Peart in Lakeside Park within the city's Port Dalhousie neighbourhood.
Peart once wrote about the park in an eponymous song on 1975 Caress of Steel, where he reminisces, "Days of barefoot freedom / Racing with the waves / Nights of starlit secrets / Crackling driftwood flames."
So far, the petition is nearing its 25,000-signature goal. The number is still rising by the minute while this article's being written.
RE/MAX Garden City Hendriks Team Realty has also signed the petition and agreed to donate $1,000 towards the cost of the plaque or statue.
The St. Catharines Standard has spoken to Peart's nephew, Jason Howe, who confirmed the full support of Peart's family. "They think it's a great honour," he added.
