ZZ Top have returned to the stage for the first time since bassist Dusty Hill's death. Guitar tech Elwood Francis has handled bass duties since the middle of July.

Billy Gibbons talked to Variety about ZZ Top's death,

“Passing through the grieving process, I can tell you it’s no less than anyone else that loses a good friend or a close associate. And at the same time, knowing that this came up so suddenly — going to bed and not waking up… That was the luck of the draw. He was in, and he was out.”

Dusty Hill himself told the band to replace him with Elwood Francis saying,

“In the meantime, I want you to grab our guitar technician, Mr. Elwood... Elwood Francis...and take him out of that tech station and strap him up with my guitar and make him carry on with every single note.”

Billy Gibbons went on to say that he would respect Dusty Hill's wishes. According to Gibbons, it didn't take long for Francis to pick it up as he's been a guitar tech for 30 years.
