Billy Joel shares snippet of his first new solo track in decades

Billy is back!

Billy Joel has announced that he will be releasing his first new single in 17 years, sharing a snippet of it on his Instagram.

After a 17-year hiatus from recording, the music icon has announced that he will be releasing a new single called 'Turn The Lights Back On' in February. Columbia Records will release the single on streaming platforms on 1 February with an accompanying limited edition 7" vinyl.

The snippet is seconds long and is just Joel playing a few notes on the piano, but it's got that signature sound we love him for.

According to a press release, the new song is a "classic Billy Joel-style tune, embodying the hallmarks of his signature sound and ushering in the next chapter of his story. In the lyrics, he asks, 'Did I wait too long... to turn the lights back on?'"

The 'Piano Man' hitmaker, 74, hinted at new music during a performance at New York's Madison Square Garden in December last year.

"I have good news and bad news," the six-time Grammy winner told the crowd. "I'll give you the bad news first. We don't have anything new to play for you. The good news is you don't have to sit through something you have no idea what it is. Although, we got a little something we're working on you might hear sometime."

'Turn The Lights Back On' is the first true single Billy has released since the release of 'All My Life' in 2007. The 2007 hit reached number one on Billboard's Hot Singles Sales Chart.

The 'Vienna' singer's last studio album, 'Fantasies & Delusions', was released in 2001.

The track was produced and co-written by Freddy Wrexler, who has worked with artists including Selena Gomez, Celine Dion, Justin Bieber and Kanye West.

It is not yet known if the single will be followed by an album.
