12 songs to celebrate anti-love this Valentine's Day

The Sound Workday 13/02/2020

A few days ago, we asked you to name anti-love and break-up songs on Facebook, and boy, those were some great suggestions!

1. Tainted Love - Gloria Jones/Soft Cell/Marilyn Manson
Once I ran to you (I ran)
Now I'll run from you
This tainted love you've given
I give you all a boy could give you

This song is about a person in a toxic relationship whose partner is emotionally and physically stringing them along until they're worn out. Ultimately, they make the difficult decision to leave, knowing that their own needs will never be met.

2. Hey Joe - The Jimi Hendrix Experience
I'm goin' down to shoot my old lady
You know I caught her messin' 'round with another man

All you need to know about this song is that a woman got shot down by her lover because she cheated on him.

3. Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
When routine bites hard and ambitions are low
And resentment rides high, but emotions won't grow
And we're changing our ways, taking different roads

The title and lyrics above says it all.

4. You Oughta Know - Alanis Morrisette
Does she know how you told me
You'd hold me until you died
'Til you died, but you're still alive

If you listened to the full lyrics, it's pretty obvious that Morrisette was singing to an ex-lover who left her for another woman... and she's reminding him of their loving relationship before she was "quickly replaced".

5. Delilah - Tom Jones
My my my Delilah
Why why why Delilah
I could see, that girl was no good for me
But I was lost like a slave that no man could free

This Tom Jones song is about a crime of passion. He narrates the song from a POV of a man who caught his lover cheating on him. Although he realises that she was no good for him, he decides to confront her later, where she laughed in his face. That's when things got dark because he stabbed her to death.

6. 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover - Paul Simon
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free

The title says it all, my friend.

7. Wicked Game - Chris Isaak
I'd never dreamed that I'd meet somebody like you
And I'd never dreamed that I'd lose somebody like you
No, I don't want to fall in love (this girl is only gonna break your heart)

This sad song is about a man who couldn't help falling in love with someone who had led him on. She made him believe that she would be his world but eventually, she left him.

8. Used to love her - Guns N' Roses
I used to love her, oh yeah but I had to kill her
I had to put her six feet under
And I can still hear her complain

The simplistic lyrics tells a story of a person killing a woman... but actually, Axl Rose wrote the lyrics as a joke. Rumours say that it was actually about his dog.

However, the song was involved in a two murder trials, including a 2002 case of Justin Barber who downloaded the song just hours before murdering his wife. Another man, Thomas Michael Wilhelm who allegedly sang the song just before he shot his ex-lover, Christine Murray in 2012.

9. I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You - Ramones
I don't want to walk around with you
I don't want to walk around with you
I don't want to walk around with you
So why you want to walk around with me?
I don't want to walk around with you
I don't want to walk around with you
I don't want to walk around with you
I don't want to walk around with you
I don't want to walk around with you
So why you want to walk around with me?
I don't want to walk around with you
I don't want to walk around with you
I don't want to walk around with you
I don't want to walk around with you
I don't want to walk around with you
So why you want to walk around with me?

10. I'm Looking Through You - The Beatles
Why, tell me why, did you not treat me right?
Love has a nasty habit of disappearing overnight

This song was inspired by a disagreement between Sir Macca and Jane Asher. The pair were living together in London, but she spent a lot of time away in Bristol to pursue her acting career.

11. One More Time - Joe Jackson
Baby, baby, tell me that you never wanted my loving
Baby, baby, tell me that you never, tell me, tell me
One more time, one more time, say you're leaving, say goodbye

The song starts with "Tell me one more time, as I hold your hand, that you don't love me". From the singer's POV, it's clear that his lover is trying to break up with him and he's trying to convince her otherwise.

12. Happy Loving Couples - Joe Jackson
Happy loving couples make it look so easy
Happy loving couples always talk so kind
Until the time that I can do my dancing with a partner
Those happy couples ain't no friends of mine

Like Nik said, it's not a very happy song, is it? It's all about being jealous of his friends who are in happy loving relationships.

Don't forget to tune in at 10 AM on 14th Feb (tomorrow) for a special 'Love' Ten at 10 with Heather Keats from the Sound Workday.
